Introducing our #socialstudent leaders
Today, Behind the Spin has released a list of the top ten PR students from the #socialstudent rankings according to their presence on social media. Editor Richard Bailey introduces this new ranking.
Every student is sociable, right? After all, university is a carefree time for making friends. Almost every student has some form of social media footprint, but not many realise that their social media presence can be a way not only to make friends – but to influence people and advance careers.
Employers increasingly expect students and graduates to have some understanding of social media. Where better to start practising than with yourself?
Our top ten students are those with the highest aggregate scores as assessed by these Klout and PeerIndex lists. There are many questions about the way they calculate their numbers, but the concepts of PeopleRank (Klout) and Social Capital (PeerIndex) are powerful and valuable. Nor is it just about Twitter. Note how many of our top ten maintain their own blogs.
Two headlines stand out:
- Congratulations to Michael White for leading our inaugural ranking (and to University of Gloucestershire with two places in the top ten)
- A special mention to Jazz Chappell who is still in her first year (and to Leeds Metropolitan University with seven of the top ten)
Our top ten list is a work in progress. The scores will change and new entrants have a chance to gain promotion to the elite – especially as everyone has free access to Klout and PeerIndex – and final year students will graduate next summer and leave the list. As it’s based on verifiable numbers it’s an objective listing – but I can’t help noting that I personally know nine of the top ten, and the tenth has contributed to this magazine.
If I’ve overlooked anyone, then please alert me and I’ll add you to our ranking. The full list has over 50 PR students, but we’re only releasing the top ten names today.
We aim to provide frequent updates through the university year. But it’s still just an indication: we don’t encourage obsessive concentration on personal rankings to the exclusion of coursework, placements or meeting real friends.
The list is only open to PR students studying on full-time undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the UK. Here’s our top ten on 4 November 2011.

Good work Richard. Very pleased that I managed to get to No.1 based on Klout and Peer Index scores. Makes me smile to see Lauren from the University of Gloucestershire as well! Social Media and Blogging is all about the enjoyment for me. This is a useful list to see but ultimately we are all one big PR Student community! I wonder how this list will change over the next 3 months?

Congratulations on this great initiative Richard! And well done to the students who have got such high rankings – will look at all your profiles to see what I can learn from you!
I’ve just written a blog about the employability skills that universities need to be teaching http://bit.ly/rsD4JB and learning how to use Twitter, blogging and LinkedIn strategically are some of the things that I think should be included.
Great idea this – we’ll be watching how everyone progresses
