A public relations consultancy is giving PR students the competitive edge by awarding a “Different Diploma”.
Harrogate-based Different PR, founded by ex-journalists Richard Chew and David Simister, prides itself on offering undergraduates the opportunity to experience a practical working environment and gain an insight to the public relations industry.
To gain the Different Diploma, students have to pass a set number of relevant tasks – to a specific standard – including news release writing, compiling media lists and preparing for pitches.
And, importantly, the Different Diploma is designed to complement the student’s university coursework and ultimately make a positive contribution to their degree.
Director David Simister said:
“We pride ourselves in offering work experience to undergraduates studying a PR degree. Many join us with no relevant experience whatsoever, and it’s our aim to ensure they learn from their time with us. The Different Diploma is something the students can put in their portfolio and show to prospective employers, either when applying for short-term placements or for a full time job once they have graduated.”
Director Richard Chew added: “When other companies cut back on the opportunities they offer students, Different PR continues to provide training, even to those just starting out on their career path.”
