Really interesting article.
I think for the majority of current PR students, public affairs, or really, any other discipline other that consumer PR, is not considered.
I would say that this is because on a PR course, student come on to it expecting to enter a glam career looking after desirable clients. I think, although as exciting this type of work could be, more emphasis should be put on highlighting the public affairs side of the industry, and how this type of job can have so many paths and rewards.
As a PR student, government/lobbying e.t.c does seem daunting but at the same time worth getting my teeth into.

I enjoyed your article. Thanks for the inspiration to blog more generally than I usually do about PR.

I would have to disagree with you on your opinion that PR is not as hard as a career in public affairs.
Public Relations is based on daunting deadlines and making sure you are providing a service that will best benefit the client as well as build a respectable reputation of the organization.
A person going into PR must have a clear, sharp mind and a strong solid will of determination. This industry is based dedication and a willingness help build a positive, credible and honest image for your client.
You have to push yourself to deliver for your client, and success is not guaranteed. In short this is not an easy job, but somebody has to do it....so leave it for us!
