There is a laughingstock issue that is likely to linger for a long, long time with Tiger. Spectators shouting: "Get in the hole!" Nike's tag "Just do it." Gatorade's "Is it in you?" All of these things will serve as a reminder of the massive fraud Tiger's former image really was. I agree the public is forgiving. But they won't so easily forget and the laughingstock issue will be hard on someone with Tiger's outsized and (possibly somewhat fragile) ego especially as it lingers and the snicker factor is always in the background.

Thanks for the mention Priyanka; I'm now asking people what they think Tiger should say when he does speak to the media:

Thanks for commenting, Dan.

I think it's important to separate out the personal issues from those surrounding the commercial brand.

Mark Borkowski, writing in Media Guardian, argues that sports sponsorship will never be the same again: http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/organgrinder/2009/dec/11/tiger-woods-pr-disaster-brands

My own view is that Tiger Woods could become a more relaxed and likeable personality now that he no longer has to live up to an impossible myth - but I'm not a fan of golf, nor a US citizen, so perhaps I see things differently.

Alraune forwarded your piece to me. I teach public relations at the University of Washington. You have done an excellent job of presenting an overview of PR opinions regarding Tiger Woods situation. Either he was poorly counseled or he ignored good advice. Mostly, it's like the headline of the Sports Illustrated article "The Sadness". Tiger's public persona will never be the same regardless of his performance on the golf course.

Hi Alraune, thanks for your comment! You're right, the AIG party at a luxury resort after the $85m bailout is the most ridiculous thing I've heard in a while. Either they fell prey to some totally retarded PR advice, or they simply chose not to heed any PR opinion at all!

- with spelling corrections -
Priyanka – congratulations on another very well researched and analyzed article. Being an American, I am intimately aware of the role of PR in my everyday surroundings and ever so often there is a case like this where one can’t help but be stunned at the sheer bone headedness of PR experts ! Take AIG for instance. How did the PR professionals miss that going out on a party binge when the company was being bailed out by the govt. would pass muster without public notice? How could experienced, highly professional PR companies give such misdirected advice? Over confidence perhaps ?
Waiting to read your next article …

Tiger Woods’ ordeal over the past couple weeks reminds me of the importance of defining your own message in today’s digital age. When a crisis or scandal of such a juicy nature embroils a celebrity, the glare of the media spotlight will surround them whether they choose to embrace it, and failure to face the storm provides fertile ground for rumors and innuendo. I wrote more about how Tiger should have addressed the media clearly and transparently on Bulletproof Blog: http://www.bulletproofblog.com/2009/12/08/social-media-versus-the-tiger/
