Ben Matthews: All in a day’s work

Ben currently works at 33 Digital, an international digital PR and marketing agency. Ben is also the founder of Bright One, a volunteer-run communications agency for the Third Sector.
7am: First cup of coffee of the day (and definitely not the last!). Mine’s a latte (PR cliche, I know…).
8am: As I’m part of the digital team, we don’t read the newspapers daily like traditional PROs do. I get my news through a mixture of news sites such as the BBC, RSS feeds, Twitter, and what colleagues and contacts share with me through sites like Delicious.
9am: I’m trying out a new way of working at the moment, which is inspired by the GTD (Getting Things Done) principles. Before checking any emails, I get the 3 most important pieces of work finished. This means that even if don’t achieve too much later in the day, the most important work has still been done. It’s not always possible if a client calls you up with something urgent or something has to be prioritised above something else, but it seems to be working so far!
10:00am: Dive into emails, which normally means responding to clients to report on progress or coverage gained, journalists to discuss news articles or to set up briefings with clients, and colleagues for just about everything else!
11:00am: We launched a competition for a client yesterday, conducting outreach online on blogs, forums, Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn to drive awareness and interest. The news was picked up on some top news sites and on several blogs, as well as lots of buzz on Twitter, so I scan online for coverage and pull it together into an update report for the client. He’s going to be very pleased with the results!
12pm: Dash to Tesco (for a ‘credit crunch lunch’).
12:15pm: Back in the office, if I’m not running errands, and catch up with colleagues.
12:30pm: Spend some time checking Twitter, RSS Feeds, Behind the Spin (of course) to see what else is going on and if there’s anything of relevance to clients.
1pm: Client meeting in the City, so jump in a cab with a colleague. Chat about the meeting ahead and other projects on the go at the moment
3pm: Back from a good meeting and sit down with the rest of the team to debrief them on what needs to be done as a result of the meeting. Luckily, we’re ahead of the game so not too many actions on our side!
4pm: The client calls have slowed down a bit by now (as has my work rate!), so spend some time drafting project plans, conducting outreach online on behalf of clients, or generally answering emails. Then again, things pick up again after I have my third or fourth coffee of the day!
6pm: After work, I normally have a meeting for Bright One, the volunteer-run communications agency that I founded. This could either be a client meeting, meeting with volunteers to either get them involved with a project or find out how they’re getting on, or going to networking events. It’s a lot of fun and we’re doing a lot of great work with some very worthy causes, but can be difficult to keep going after a busy day at work. Luckily, the meetings normally take place in bars convenient for everyone to meet at, so there’s always a drink or two at hand!
9pm: Walk through my front door and relax for an hour or so before heading to bed. What a day!
